What happened

The National Statistics Office (NSO) released draft guidelines for compiling Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) estimates from the expenditure side with a base year of 2022-23 to ensure consistency and comparability across States and UTs. Stakeholder feedback is invited until October 28, 2026.

Why it matters for UPSC

This release is important for UPSC GS Paper III (Indian Economy and issues relating to planning, mobilization of resources, growth, and development) as it deals with national income accounting methodologies and statistical frameworks at the sub-national level.

Key objectives

  1. Provide a uniform and comprehensive framework for compiling GSDP from the expenditure side across States and Union Territories with base year 2022-23.
  2. Elaborate concepts, data sources, and methodologies for major expenditure components including PFCE, GFCE, GFCF, Changes in Inventories, Valuables, and Net Exports.
  3. Strengthen statistical capacity of State Directorates of Economics and Statistics (DESs) and harmonize estimation practices.
