What happened
The Ministry of Law and Justice has launched a nationwide, research-based mission involving 19 National Law Universities to address litigation pendency across 100 hotspot districts. These targeted districts account for over half of all district-court pendency out of over 5.8 crore pending cases nationwide.
Why it matters for UPSC
This initiative illustrates structural reforms in the judicial system and governance, aligning with UPSC syllabus themes on mechanisms and institutions for dispute redressal and reducing case pendency in subordinate courts.
Key objectives
- Target the top 100 judicial districts with high litigation pendency, which account for over half of all district-court pendency.
- Engage 19 National Law Universities across 16 states to utilize pro bono clubs, researchers, and students for ground-level analysis.
- Deliberate on alternatives like case profiling, alternative dispute resolution, plea bargaining, mediation-assisted settlements, and summary trials.
