What happened

Scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences reconstructed 4,600 years of climate and environmental history in the Central Ganga Plain using Karela Lake sediments. The study revealed how Indian Summer Monsoon fluctuations historically influenced lake hydrology, vegetation, and early agricultural adaptations.

Why it matters for UPSC

This study illustrates the application of palaeoclimatic research in understanding long-term human-climate interactions, which is vital for environmental management and climate adaptation studies in UPSC General Studies Paper III (Environment and Science & Technology).

Key objectives

  1. Reconstructed 4,600 years of climate and environmental history in the Central Ganga Plain using proxies from Karela Lake near Lucknow.
  2. Identified four major environmental phases linked to key climatic events including the 4.2 ka arid event, the Roman Warm Period, and the Little Ice Age.
  3. Demonstrated that Indian Summer Monsoon fluctuations controlled lake hydrology, sediment transport, vegetation shifts, and early farming adaptations.
