What happened

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has commenced Digi Yatra trials for international passengers at seven airports across India from November to December 2026. The initiative allows eligible Indian nationals with e-passports to use biometric-enabled processing on select flights to gather feedback for a wider rollout in 2027.

Why it matters for UPSC

This development illustrates the integration of digital technology in public infrastructure and governance under the Digital India initiative, relevant for the Science and Technology and e-governance sections of the UPSC syllabus.

Key objectives

  1. Conduct trials for international passengers at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai, and Amritsar airports from November to December 2026.
  2. Allow eligible Indian nationals holding e-passports to use Digi Yatra on select international flights operated by Air India and IndiGo.
  3. Collect passenger feedback through the trials to plan a wider rollout in 2027.
